About this image
Peaches tumbling off the pile. Strawberries heaping over the edges of their baskets. Flowers crammed so tightly into buckets that petals press against petals. A farmers market table that cannot contain what has been placed on it -- abundance beyond capacity, more than enough, life to the full and then some. John 10:10 is Jesus defining His mission in a single sentence: "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." The Greek word for "full" is perissos -- which means not merely sufficient but superabundant, exceeding, overflowing. More than you asked for. More than you expected. More than the container can hold. This is not the prosperity gospel -- Jesus is not promising material wealth. He is promising life itself in its most vivid, most textured, most deeply experienced form. The peach at a farmers market is different from the peach at a supermarket -- not because it is a different species but because it has been allowed to ripen fully, picked at the peak of its life, brought directly to the table. That is the difference between survival and abundant life. The thief in the first half of John 10:10 "comes only to steal and kill and destroy." The contrast is total. The thief offers less; Christ offers more. The thief diminishes; Christ multiplies. The thief takes life; Christ gives it -- pressed down, shaken together, running over.
