About this image
The most sacred object of Shiva worship — the Shiva Lingam — is depicted in intimate devotional detail in this HD Maha Shivaratri wallpaper. The black stone Lingam glistens with fresh milk flowing over it in the ancient abhishekam (sacred bathing) ritual. Green bilva (bel) leaves and white flowers are arranged at the base — bilva leaves are the most sacred offering to Shiva, believed to please Him like no other. A brass Naga (serpent) coils protectively behind the Lingam. A single oil lamp burns to the side, its warm golden light playing across the wet black stone surface. Incense smoke curls upward into the temple darkness above. The composition captures the deep shadows and intimate devotional atmosphere of a Shiva temple on Shivaratri night. Maha Shivaratri — "the Great Night of Shiva" — falls on the fourteenth night of the dark fortnight in the month of Phalguna (February/March) and is the most important night of the year for Shiva devotees. While all twelve months have a monthly Shivaratri, Maha Shivaratri is the most auspicious. Devotees observe a strict fast, perform abhishekam of the Shiva Lingam with milk, curds, honey, and water, chant "Om Namah Shivaya" through the night, and maintain wakefulness as a spiritual offering to Mahadeva.
