The sacred Shiva Lingam receiving the devotional bath of milk (abhishekam) -- white milk flowing smoothly over the smooth black stone surface as bilva (bael) leaves rest on top and fresh flowers are scattered around the base. On either side, oil diya lamps burn with a warm golden glow that illuminates the temple interior against the deep darkness. The Shiva Lingam is the most worshipped form of Shiva in India, found in millions of temples from the grandest structures at Varanasi and Ujjain to the smallest village shrine. The aniconic form represents the infinite formless nature of Shiva -- a god who transcends all human-scale representations. Abhishekam (ritual bathing) is the primary form of Shiva Lingam worship, performed daily in all Shiva temples. The bathing substances carry meaning -- milk represents purity, honey represents sweetness of devotion, water from the Ganga represents spiritual purification, and sandalwood paste represents cooling of the ego.
