Lord Shiva in his raw ascetic form -- the Aghori yogi seated by a sacred fire (dhuni) deep in a dark forest at night. Matted dreadlocks cascade around his ash-smeared body, rudraksha beads and a tiger skin his only adornments. Smoke swirls around him in the firelight, creating an atmosphere of primal mysticism. This is Shiva as the Adi Yogi -- not the regal deity of temple icons but the wild ascetic who chose the cremation grounds and forests over palaces. The Naga Sadhus of India still follow this tradition, living as Shiva lives -- renouncing all worldly possessions, smearing their bodies with ash, and meditating by sacred fires.
