The most terrifying and magnificent form of Lord Shiva -- the moment of cosmic destruction when Rudra opens his third eye. Blazing golden-white fire erupts from the opened eye as cosmic energy cracks through the universe itself. His hair flies wild, snakes writhe, and his face contorts in divine rage that will unmake and remake creation. The crescent moon above his head seems to tremble. This scene represents the end of a cosmic cycle (pralaya) when Shiva performs the Tandava of destruction, dissolving the universe so it can be created anew. The Rudra form is Shiva at his most fearsome -- the howling storm god of the Vedas whose very name means "the terrible one." Yet Hindu philosophy teaches that even this destruction is an act of cosmic compassion -- clearing away the old to make room for the new.
