It is celebrated simultaneously across India but with different names and customs: Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Lohri the day before in Punjab, Bihu in Assam, Magh Bihu in Assam, and Uttarayan in Gujarat and Rajasthan. In Gujarat and parts of Maharashtra and Rajasthan, kite flying (patang bazi) is the defining activity of the day — the sky literally turns into a canvas of competing colors. Ahmedabad hosts one of the world's largest kite festivals on Makar Sankranti, drawing kite flyers from across the globe. The theological significance: just as the sun changes its course on this day and begins its northward journey, devotees are reminded to realign their own spiritual compass toward God.
