According to a popular legend, aerodynamic models once declared the bumblebee incapable of flight. The wings are too small, the body too heavy, the physics does not work on paper. The bee, unaware of the calculations, flies anyway. The legend is oversimplified -- bumblebees use rotational lift that conventional fixed-wing models do not account for -- but the image endures because it captures something true: what looks impossible by one set of rules operates perfectly under another. Mark 9:23 is Jesus' response to a father who brought his demon-possessed son and said, "If you can do anything, take pity on us." Jesus echoes the man's own words back with an edge: "If you can? Everything is possible for one who believes." The Greek word dynata -- "possible" -- comes from dynamis, power. It is the root of "dynamite." Jesus is not saying "everything might work out." He is saying: the power to accomplish this is available, and the access point is belief. The father's response is one of the most honest prayers in scripture: "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief." He does not pretend his faith is complete.
