December 17, 1903. Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. A machine made of spruce wood, muslin fabric, and a twelve-horsepower engine lifted off the ground for twelve seconds and covered 120 feet. Most of the scientific establishment believed powered flight was decades away, if achievable at all. Simon Newcomb, one of the most respected astronomers in America, had published a proof just months earlier demonstrating that human flight was mathematically impossible. The Wright brothers did not disprove his math. They simply operated under different assumptions and built the thing anyway. This split composition places their fragile Flyer I beside a modern jet -- the distance between "impossible" and "routine" measured in belief and persistence. Mark 9:23 was spoken to a man who had watched his son suffer for years, who had tried every remedy, who had brought the boy to the disciples and watched them fail. "If you can" was not skepticism.
