A mustard seed weighs approximately one to two milligrams. You could lose a hundred of them in a coat pocket and never notice. Jesus chose this seed deliberately -- not an acorn, not a fig seed, not a grain of wheat. The mustard seed was the smallest seed familiar to Palestinian farmers, so small that the Mishnah (Niddah 5:2) used it as a unit of measurement for things almost too tiny to matter. And Jesus says this is enough. The context matters enormously. The disciples had just failed to cast out a demon from an epileptic boy. They had been given authority to do exactly this kind of work. They had done it before. But this time it did not work, and they came to Jesus privately, embarrassed, asking why. His answer was not "you need more training" or "you need a better technique." It was: your faith is too small. But then immediately -- and this is the part people miss -- he says even mustard-seed faith is enough to relocate geography. The problem was not the quantity of their faith. It was the absence of it entirely.
