The net spreads wide over dark water. Below the surface: nothing visible. The fisherman casts anyway, because fishing has never been about seeing the fish first. It has always been about believing they are there. At least four of Jesus' twelve disciples were commercial fishermen on the Sea of Galilee -- Peter, Andrew, James, and John. They understood this metaphor in their bones. You mend the nets, you row to the spot, you throw, and you wait. Sometimes you haul in a catch that nearly sinks the boat (Luke 5:6-7). Sometimes you fish all night and catch nothing (John 21:3). But you cast the net before you have evidence. Always. Matthew 21:22 is spoken during the final week of Jesus' life, in the days between the triumphal entry and the crucifixion. The fig tree incident is a parable enacted in real time -- fruitlessness judged, faith demonstrated, a lesson given to men who will need it desperately in about seventy-two hours. "Whatever you ask" is not a blank check for selfish requests. It is a promise spoken to people who are about to enter the darkest period of their lives and will need to cast nets into water they cannot see through.
