About this image
Eyes squeezed shut. Cheeks puffed. The full conviction of a child who believes that blowing out candles actually works. There is no skepticism in this posture, no hedging, no "well, it probably won't happen but I'll try anyway." The child believes, and the believing is total. Matthew 21:22 comes after one of the most dramatic demonstrations of faith in the Gospels. Jesus cursed a fig tree and it withered overnight. The disciples are stunned. Jesus is matter-of-fact: "If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer." The Greek word pisteuo -- "believe" -- is not intellectual agreement. It is not acknowledging that something might be true. It is trust, the kind that acts on what it holds to be real. The child does not blow out candles while secretly thinking birthday wishes are silly. The child blows with everything, because the child believes with everything. Jesus repeatedly pointed to children as models of faith, not because children are naive, but because they have not yet learned to protect themselves from disappointment by lowering their expectations. Adults call that "being realistic." Jesus calls it something else. This warm, candlelit moment freezes the instant before the breath meets the flame -- pure belief in motion.
