Our Lady of Grace stands in the iconic pose that appeared in the miraculous vision granted to Saint Catherine Laboure in Paris in 1830 -- arms extended slightly downward, palms open, rays of brilliant golden light streaming from her open hands onto the globe of the earth below. These rays of light represent the graces she obtains from God for those who ask for them, flowing from her hands to the world below. Her white dress shines with pure light; her blue mantle falls in soft folds around her. She stands upon the globe of the world with a serpent beneath her feet, fulfilling the prophecy of Genesis 3:15 -- "I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head." A crown of twelve stars encircles her head, echoing the vision of Revelation 12:1. Following the apparition, Saint Catherine asked that a medal be struck with this image. The medal -- carrying Our Lady of Grace on one side and a cross with M and stars on the other -- became known as the Miraculous Medal after numerous documented healings and conversions were attributed to wearing it. Today it is one of the most widely worn Catholic religious medals in the world, with over a billion medals distributed since 1832. Our Lady of Grace under this title is venerated in churches worldwide, and the pose of open hands with streaming light has become one of the most instantly recognizable images of Marian devotion.
