In a rocky grotto at the base of the Pyrenean town of Lourdes in southern France, a young 14-year-old girl named Bernadette Soubirous saw a "beautiful lady" for the first time on February 11, 1858. The Lady appeared eighteen times in total, standing in a niche of the Massabielle grotto, dressed in white with a blue sash, golden roses at her feet, holding a rosary of white beads. She identified herself simply as "I am the Immaculate Conception" -- a dogma of the Catholic faith that had been proclaimed by Pope Pius IX just four years earlier in 1854, and which the uneducated Bernadette could not have known. This HD wallpaper captures the apparition as Bernadette described it: Our Lady in white and blue standing over the spring that appeared at her command on the ninth apparition, when the Lady told Bernadette to "drink from the spring and wash in it." The spring, which had not existed before, began to flow and has continued ever since. The water of Lourdes has been associated with thousands of documented healings -- the Catholic Church has officially recognized 70 miracles at Lourdes after rigorous medical investigation, though many more cases remain unexplained. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes receives approximately 6 million pilgrims each year, making it one of the most visited pilgrimage destinations in the world.
