Mile 24 of 26.2. The legs are heavy. The compression socks are soaked with sweat. The feet have blisters that formed at mile 15 and have been screaming ever since. The asphalt stretches ahead, still going, relentless, hot in the afternoon sun. This is not the glamorous start line with fresh legs and high hopes. This is not the finish line with its medals and cheering crowds. This is the pressing on -- the part of the race that no one photographs because it is not beautiful. It is just grit. Paul wrote Philippians 3:14 from prison -- a man who knew something about pressing on through difficulty: "I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." The Greek word for "press on" is dioko -- to pursue, to run after, to chase with intensity. It is the same word used for hunting prey and, ironically, for persecuting (Paul used it to describe his former persecution of Christians). Now the persecutor has become the pursuer -- but the target has changed from destroying the church to winning the heavenly prize. The marathon runner at mile 24 knows something that the runner at mile 1 does not: the race is not won at the start. It is won in the last miles, when everything hurts and the body demands that you stop. The pressing on is not about speed or style. It is about refusal to quit.
