Multiple angels ascending a staircase of golden divine light toward a brilliant apex of radiance, their wings spread at different heights along the ascent -- an image rooted in one of the most famous visions in the Bible. This is Jacob's Ladder from Genesis 28: the patriarch Jacob falls asleep at Bethel and dreams of "a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God ascending and descending on it." God stands at the top and renews the covenant made with Abraham. The vision has given humanity one of its most enduring metaphors -- the stairway to heaven connecting the divine and human realms. In Jewish mysticism (Kabbalah), the ascending and descending angels represent the constant flow of divine energy downward into creation and human prayer upward toward the divine. In Christian mysticism, the image was later developed by John Climacus in "The Ladder of Divine Ascent," depicting spiritual progress as a literal climb. In Islamic tradition, the Night Journey of the Prophet (Isra and Mi'raj) involved a similar ascent through heavenly levels.
