About this image
To exalt means to raise something above everything else. Not beside. Not equal to. Above. The physical act of running a flag up a pole makes that hierarchy visible -- the flag climbs past the roofline, past the trees, past the highest point anyone standing below can reach, and claims the sky. Psalm 145:1 uses the future tense with deliberate emphasis. "I will exalt you" -- not "I have exalted you" or "I sometimes exalt you." This is a standing commitment, renewed every morning. Jewish tradition assigned Psalm 145 a unique status: it is the only psalm recited three times daily in the liturgical cycle, appearing in both Shacharit (morning) and Mincha (afternoon) services. The Talmud in Berachot 4b states that anyone who recites this psalm three times a day is guaranteed a place in the world to come. The rabbis saw in these twenty-one verses something comprehensive enough to sustain an entire life of worship. And it begins here, at verse one, with a declaration that sounds simple but costs everything: my God the King. Not a king among many. The King.
