About this image
One set of footprints is heavy and stumbling -- the gait of someone barely keeping upright. But beside them, another set appears from nowhere. No approaching trail, no origin point. Someone simply began walking alongside the one who was struggling. That is the visual promise of Psalm 34:18. The snow setting strips everything to essentials. White ground, soft grey sky, two parallel paths in the powder. Winter in scripture often represents seasons of hardship -- Ecclesiastes speaks of times and seasons, and the cold months have served as metaphors for spiritual desolation in Christian literature from John of the Cross to C.S. Lewis. But the footprints tell a different story than desolation alone. They tell a story of accompaniment. The theological term is "divine presence" or shekinah in Hebrew tradition -- God dwelling alongside, not above. The Talmud (Berakhot 6a) teaches that the Shekhinah rests upon those who are sick or grieving. Psalm 34:18 makes the same claim in poetic form. The morning light is soft and diffused -- no harsh shadows, no dramatic contrast. Just quiet illumination on a quiet scene. The verse appears in white text that almost blends with the snow, because the message is not shouted. It is whispered. Free HD download for phone and desktop.
