About this image
Overnight, the snow came. And this morning, the dirty city street that yesterday showed every stain -- tire tracks, oil spots, litter against the curbs -- is invisible under a blanket of perfect, unbroken white. Fire hydrants wear snow caps. Trash cans have become abstract sculptures. Every imperfection covered, every blemish hidden, the entire street given a clean start it did nothing to earn. David wrote Psalm 51 after the prophet Nathan confronted him about his affair with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband Uriah -- the lowest moment in the life of Israel's greatest king. His prayer is not "help me do better." It is far more radical: "Create in me a pure heart, O God." The Hebrew word for "create" here is bara -- the same word used in Genesis 1:1 for God creating the heavens and the earth. David is not asking for renovation. He is asking for creation ex nihilo -- something from nothing, purity where there was none. He knows that no amount of self-improvement can clean what he has dirtied. Only the Creator who made the human heart can unmake and remake it. The snow in this image is bara made visible. The city did not clean itself. The street did not scrub away its own stains. The snow came from above, unbidden and unearned, and covered everything. That is grace. Not the absence of dirt but the presence of covering. Free HD download for phone and desktop.
