About this image
The eraser sweeps across the blackboard, and the old equations vanish in a cloud of chalk dust. Yesterday's work, yesterday's mistakes, yesterday's half-finished problems -- all disappearing under the broad stroke of the eraser, the surface returning to clean black, ready for something new to be written. Classroom afternoon light catches the chalk particles floating in the air like tiny white prayers. Psalm 51:10 asks God for two things: a pure heart and a steadfast spirit. The Hebrew for "pure" is tahor -- a ritual purity word, the same word used to describe animals fit for sacrifice, water fit for cleansing, gold refined of all impurity. The Hebrew for "steadfast" is nachon -- firm, established, fixed. David asks not just for cleansing but for stability after the cleansing -- because he knows that a clean heart without a steadfast spirit will just get dirty again. The blackboard in this image captures both requests. The erasing is the pure heart -- the old markings removed, the surface restored. But the blackboard itself remains solid, fixed to the wall, ready for new writing. It is simultaneously cleaned and steadfast. Every teacher knows the small satisfaction of a freshly erased board -- the moment before the new lesson begins, when anything is possible, when the mistakes of the previous class have been wiped away and the blank surface invites fresh thought. That is the spiritual fresh start David craved. Download this HD wallpaper.
