About this image
Turn the dial. Find the frequency. The signal was already there before you tuned in. Romans 10:17 makes a claim about the mechanics of faith that is both simple and profound: faith is not self-generated. It comes from outside you. Specifically, it comes through hearing, and what you hear is the word about Christ. The Greek word akoe means both "hearing" and "the thing heard" -- the message itself and the act of receiving it. Paul is setting up a logical chain that he traces backward in verses 14-15: How can they believe if they have not heard? How can they hear without a preacher? How can anyone preach unless they are sent? Faith has a supply chain, and it starts with God sending someone who speaks. This vintage radio captures the idea perfectly. The signal exists in the air around you, invisible and inaudible, until you have a receiver tuned to the right frequency. The warm glow of the dial, the speaker grille, the morning light on the kitchen counter -- this is an ordinary moment made extraordinary by what is being received. Paul wrote this from Corinth, a city known for its communication networks. Ships carried messages across the Mediterranean. The gospel traveled the same routes.
