About this image
The Mariana Trench descends nearly 36,000 feet below the ocean surface. Humans have mapped more of the moon than the floor of their own oceans. Paul knew nothing of ocean trenches, but he understood depth. After eleven chapters of the densest theological argument in scripture -- predestination, election, the grafting of Gentiles, the future of Israel -- he pauses. The argument is finished. And instead of a conclusion, he writes a hymn. "Oh, the depth." The Greek word bathos does not just mean "deep." It implies something beyond measurement, beyond the reach of a plumb line. Paul is saying: I have spent eleven chapters trying to trace the logic of God, and I have reached the edge of what language can carry. This wallpaper places a solitary diver at that edge. Below, the continental shelf drops away into darkness -- not empty darkness, but the kind that contains more than you can see. The blue fades to black in gradients that feel infinite. Martin Luther called Romans 11:33-36 "the most sublime passage in the Bible." It is the moment theology becomes worship. Free HD download for phone and desktop.
