About this image
Weathered hands. Golden sand slipping between fingers. And a promise so large it sounds like mockery: your descendants will be as numerous as these grains. Abraham was seventy-five when God first made this promise in Genesis 12. He was one hundred when Isaac was finally born. Twenty-five years of waiting, and Romans 4:20 says he "did not waver through unbelief." The Greek word diakrino, translated "waver," means to be divided in your own mind -- to argue with yourself, to let doubt and faith trade blows until neither wins. Paul says Abraham refused to do this. But honesty demands we note that Abraham was not perfect during those twenty-five years. He laughed at God's promise (Genesis 17:17). He fathered Ishmael through Hagar because Sarah suggested they help God along (Genesis 16). And yet Paul says he did not waver. How? Because wavering in Romans 4 is not the absence of questions. It is the refusal to act on the promise. Abraham stumbled, questioned, tried shortcuts -- but he never abandoned the promise. He never said "God was wrong" and walked away. He stayed in the conversation. Verse 21 adds the decisive phrase: "fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised." Not persuaded that he understood how. Persuaded that God could.
