About this image
Theotokos -- "God-Bearer" or "Mother of God" -- is the most sacred title of the Virgin Mary in Eastern Orthodox Christianity, decreed at the Council of Ephesus in 431 CE. This profound Byzantine icon depicts the Theotokos in the ancient Hodegitria style ("She who shows the way") -- the Virgin Mary holding the infant Jesus in her left arm while her right hand points toward Him, directing all who see her to her Son as the Way, the Truth, and the Life. The gold leaf background radiates divine light; Mary's deep red maphorion (prayer veil) covers her blue robe, the traditional colors of her humanity (blue) covered by divine dignity (red). Infant Jesus, depicted as a miniature adult in Byzantine convention -- acknowledging His divine nature even as an infant -- holds the Gospel book and raises His hand in blessing. Both figures wear golden halos; three stars mark Mary's veil, symbols of her perpetual virginity before, during, and after the birth of Christ. The stylized large eyes, elongated proportions, and flattened gold background are not artistic limitations but intentional theological statements: this is not a photograph of a historical person but a window into the eternal. Orthodox theology teaches that the icon is a sacramental presence -- to venerate the icon is to venerate the person depicted. This Theotokos icon has been painted in virtually identical form for 1,500 years, a living continuity of prayer. Free HD download.
