About this image
Makhan chor -- the butter thief. It is Krishna's most beloved childhood title, and in this image he lives up to it, sitting on a doorstep with a pot of freshly churned white butter, offering a handful to little Radha with a grin that says "I know this is stolen but it tastes better that way." Both children have butter smeared on their faces, the evidence of their crime visible to anyone who walks by. The Bhagavata Purana's tenth canto is full of these butter-theft stories -- the gopis of Vrindavan would complain to Yashoda that her son had broken into their houses, eaten their butter stores, and fed the rest to the monkeys. Yashoda would scold him, Krishna would cry, and the gopis would melt and forgive him instantly. In this version, Radha is his accomplice rather than the victim, which follows the Braj tradition where she is always his equal partner in every adventure. A cow peeps from behind a wall, perhaps hoping for a share. The bright cheerful colors and children's book illustration quality make this perfect for a child's room or a phone wallpaper that delivers a smile every time you unlock the screen.
