About this image
The pivotal moment in Buddhist history -- Siddhartha Gautama touching the earth with his right hand (Bhumisparsha mudra) to call the earth itself as witness to his enlightenment. Seated beneath the spreading canopy of the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India, a full moon hangs above as divine light radiates from behind the awakened one. After six years of ascetic practice and 49 days of meditation under this very tree, Siddhartha overcame the temptations of Mara (the personification of desire and death) and attained perfect knowledge of the nature of reality. The earth-touching gesture was his response when Mara challenged his right to sit on the diamond throne of enlightenment. Rather than speaking, he simply reached down and touched the ground, and the earth thundered its witness.
