Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, was born a prince in Lumbini (present-day Nepal) around 563 BCE. After encountering the suffering of old age, sickness, and death, he renounced his royal life and spent years in meditation until achieving enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya. His teachings on the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path have guided hundreds of millions for over 2,500 years.
