The story of the Buddha's enlightenment (Bodhi) is central to all schools of Buddhism. After six years of intense ascetic practice, Siddhartha sat beneath the Bodhi tree and vowed not to rise until he had attained the deepest wisdom. Through the night, Mara (the tempter) sent fear, doubt, and distraction. At dawn on the full moon of Vaisakha, Siddhartha attained complete enlightenment — Nirvana.
