About this image
A massive golden Reclining Buddha in the Parinirvana pose -- lying on his right side with head resting on his hand, eyes gently closed in the final moment of passing into Nirvana. The sheer scale of the statue fills the ornate temple interior, gold surfaces reflecting the warm ambient light. Reclining Buddha statues are found across Southeast Asia, with the most famous examples at Wat Pho in Bangkok (46 meters long), the Dambulla Cave Temple in Sri Lanka, and the Shwethalyaung Buddha in Myanmar. The reclining pose represents the historical moment when Siddhartha Gautama, at age 80, lay down between two sal trees and attained Parinirvana -- final liberation from the cycle of rebirth. Despite depicting death, the expression is one of absolute peace and contentment.
