About this image
The Teaching Buddha stands with his right hand raised in the Vitarka mudra -- thumb and forefinger touching to form a circle, the remaining fingers extended upward. This hand gesture represents the transmission of dharma (truth) and is associated with Buddha's first sermon at the Deer Park in Sarnath, where he taught the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path to his first five disciples. The composition draws from the ancient Gandhara art tradition of present-day Pakistan and Afghanistan, where Greek and Buddhist artistic styles merged to create some of the earliest figural representations of the Buddha. Disciples sit in rapt attention below, their postures reflecting the openness and humility of the student receiving ancient wisdom.
