About this image
Lord Hanuman in a state of deep spiritual meditation inside an ancient forest cave -- a form of Hanuman less often depicted but deeply important in the devotional tradition. Seated cross-legged on a tiger skin with a rudraksha mala resting in his hands, the sacred dhuni fire burns quietly nearby as warm golden firelight illuminates his powerful yet serene face. Ancient trees fill the cave entrance, their roots running through the stone walls. This meditation form of Hanuman points to the less-known aspect of his character: not just the warrior and servant, but the yogi and scholar. Hanuman is described in the Ramayana as a master of grammar, a perfect reciter of the Vedas, and a profound meditator. The Muktika Upanishad credits Hanuman with listing all 108 Upanishads. The Hanumanasatakam describes his deep states of samadhi. This side of Hanuman -- the contemplative, the seeker of divine knowledge -- is the reason he is especially worshipped by scholars, teachers, and those engaged in spiritual practice. The forest cave setting evokes the ancient gurukula tradition of forest-dwelling wisdom. Free HD download for phone and desktop.
