About this image
Why does God steal butter? It is a question that has occupied Vaishnava theologians for centuries, and the answers reveal deep layers of meaning beneath the charming surface story. One interpretation: butter is the essence extracted from milk by churning, and the devotee's heart is the essence extracted from worldly experience by spiritual practice. Krishna steals butter because he claims the best of what we produce. Another: butter melts at body temperature, symbolizing the devotee's heart that melts at the touch of the divine. Little Radha, in this image, does not need these theological explanations. She is simply sharing a meal with her best friend, both of them sitting on a worn stone doorstep that has seen generations of children do exactly this. The mischievous expressions on both faces are the universal language of childhood -- the delight of breaking a small rule together. The Vrindavan home behind them is simple: clay walls, a wooden door, a pot hanging from a beam (where the butter was stored, high up and supposedly out of reach). But Krishna has long arms for his size, or perhaps he just climbs. The illustration style deliberately evokes the warmth of a well-loved storybook.
