About this image
How many flowers does it take to make a garland for someone you love? As many as the meadow will give you, if you are Krishna. And how many meadow flowers can a small basket hold? More than physics should allow, if Radha is the one filling it. This companion image shows the same scene from a different perspective -- closer to the flowers, closer to the children, closer to the joy of an afternoon with no agenda other than being together in a garden. The wildflowers are deliberately varied: marigolds (genda), jasmine (mogra), roses, and nameless blooms that exist only in the artist's imagination. In Vrindavan today, the tradition of flower offerings remains central to Krishna worship. The Banke Bihari Temple uses kilograms of flowers daily, and during Phool Bangla (flower palace) festivals, the entire deity altar is constructed from fresh blooms. These children are participating in that tradition before they know it is a tradition -- they are simply doing what feels natural. The bright colors of this illustration work at every size, from phone wallpaper to printed poster. The composition leads the eye from Radha's basket to Krishna's hands to the garland taking shape between them. A visual story told without words.
