About this image
Before they were the divine lovers of the Rasa Lila, they were children. Running barefoot through the lanes of Vrindavan, chasing butterflies, startling cows, getting scolded by Yashoda for stealing butter and by Radha's mother Kirtida for coming home late. The Bhagavata Purana and the Sur Sagar of poet Surdas paint vivid pictures of Krishna's childhood -- the bal-lila -- and Radha appears in these stories as his earliest friend, the girl from the neighboring village of Barsana who matched his mischief step for step. This illustration captures that innocent friendship. Little Krishna, perhaps five or six years old, plays his tiny flute with the seriousness of a child who has just discovered he can make music. Little Radha, pigtails bouncing, claps along with pure delight. The Vrindavan village setting includes the essential elements: cows grazing peacefully (the Bhagavata calls them Krishna's playmates), butterflies drawn to the wildflowers, and the dusty lanes that connect Nandgaon to Barsana to this day. Pilgrims walking the Braj Parikrama path can still visit the hills where these childhood games are said to have happened. Free HD download for phone and desktop.
