About this image
The Masjid al-Haram -- the Grand Mosque of Mecca -- is the largest mosque in the world and the most sacred site in Islam. This panoramic HD wallpaper captures the entire complex in its full grandeur at sunset: the Kaaba at the center of the vast open-air courtyard, the mosque's multiple towers and minarets rising against a golden-pink sky, and the mountains of Mecca framing the scene on the horizon, their rocky flanks catching the last light. The scale of the Grand Mosque is almost incomprehensible: it currently covers an area of 356,800 square meters and can accommodate 4 million worshippers during Hajj and Ramadan, with plans for expansion to 1.2 million. The minarets -- nine in total, each rising 89 meters -- frame the ancient structure from all directions. The Abraj Al-Bait Clock Tower, one of the tallest buildings in the world, rises directly behind the mosque, creating a juxtaposition of the ancient and ultramodern that has become itself an iconic image of 21st-century Mecca. During Hajj, performed in the month of Dhul Hijjah by Muslims from every nation on earth, the Masjid al-Haram is filled to capacity with pilgrims performing tawaf (circumambulation of the Kaaba), sa'i (the walk between Safa and Marwa), and the various other rites that together constitute the fifth pillar of Islam. The sunset light in this image catches the marble and stone of the mosque in the warm colors that make Mecca's evening sky legendary among those who have seen it. Free HD download.
