About this image
The Green Dome of Masjid an-Nabawi -- the Prophet's Mosque in Medina -- is one of the most recognized and beloved images in the entire Islamic world. This HD wallpaper shows the iconic dome in all its sacred beauty at twilight, its distinctive green color glowing against the blue evening sky, the mosque's white minarets rising around it and the illuminated mosque complex stretching to the horizon. The dome marks the location of the tomb of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who is buried beneath it along with his companions Abu Bakr al-Siddiq and Umar ibn al-Khattab. For 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide, visiting this site -- sending peace and blessings upon the Prophet at his tomb -- is one of the most profoundly moving religious experiences possible. The Prophet himself said: "Whoever visits me after my death is as if he has visited me during my lifetime." Masjid an-Nabawi was originally built by the Prophet himself in 622 CE, shortly after the Hijra (migration) to Medina, with the Prophet and his companions carrying the bricks personally. Its original size was approximately 35 by 30 meters. Over fourteen centuries of expansions by various caliphs, sultans, and kings of Saudi Arabia, it has grown to accommodate 1 million worshippers simultaneously. The green color of the dome was added during the Ottoman expansion in 1817. Visiting the Prophet's Mosque in Medina is considered one of the most spiritually rewarding acts a Muslim can perform.
