About this image
Midnight on Ashtami tithi. The temple is packed to the walls. And then the curtains open. This HD wallpaper captures the most anticipated moment of the Hindu calendar for millions of ISKCON devotees worldwide -- the Janmashtami abhishekam reveal, when the deities appear in their most spectacular festival outfits of the entire year. Radha and Krishna stand on a specially elevated platform surrounded by a cascade of fresh flowers. The outfits are unique -- worn only once, on this night, then retired or sent to other temples as blessed garments. The color scheme for Janmashtami traditionally leans toward midnight blue and silver, reflecting the moonless night on which Krishna was born in Mathura's prison cell over 5,000 years ago. The "Janmashtami" text at the bottom in gold announces the occasion, making this image instantly shareable as a festival greeting. The midnight blue background reinforces the timing -- Krishna appeared at the stroke of midnight, during a thunderstorm, while guards slept under Vishnu's divine influence. In ISKCON temples from Mayapur to Los Angeles, Janmashtami draws the largest crowds of the year. The temple in Juhu, Mumbai alone sees over 50,000 visitors on this single night. The celebration culminates at midnight with pushpa abhishekam -- showering the deities with flower petals. Free HD download for phone and desktop.
