About this image
Night changes everything about the swing. The playful afternoon energy gives way to something slower, deeper, more intimate. Radha rests her head on Krishna's shoulder as the swing moves barely perceptibly, pushed by a breeze rather than a foot. The full moon provides the only illumination -- silver light filtering through tree leaves, creating a lacework of brightness and shadow across the flower-decorated swing. Fireflies add their own punctuation, tiny golden sparks that drift through the scene like the notes of a flute made visible. In the Rasa Lila narratives, the moonlit night is always the setting for Radha and Krishna's most intimate encounters. The Bhagavata Purana specifies Sharad Purnima -- the brightest full moon of the year, falling in October-November -- as the night of the original Rasa dance. This jhula scene captures the same energy in quieter form. The jasmine flowers, which release their strongest fragrance after sunset, perfume the air around the swing. The Yamuna, if it is nearby, would be reflecting the moonlight. Everything about this scene exists in the register of whispers rather than declarations. Love does not always announce itself. Sometimes it simply sways gently in the dark. Free HD download for phone and desktop.
