About this image
The jhula -- the swing -- is one of the most enduring images in Radha Krishna iconography. Every monsoon, temples across India celebrate Jhulanotsav, the swing festival, where the deity murtis are placed on elaborately decorated swings and gently pushed by devotees singing seasonal ragas. This image captures the spirit of that festival. Radha and Krishna sit together on a wooden swing hung from the aerial roots of a massive banyan tree -- the tree that Indian tradition considers immortal, a fitting anchor for an eternal couple. The swing is decorated with marigold garlands and silk ribbons in saffron and red. Krishna plays his flute, the notes perhaps providing rhythm for the gentle motion. Radha pushes with her foot, setting the pace. Peacocks watch from nearby branches, their tails folded in the relaxed posture of an afternoon with no urgency. The golden afternoon light filtering through the banyan canopy creates natural spotlights on the couple and dappled shadows on the ground below. Jhulanotsav falls during Shravan (July-August), when the monsoon greens the landscape and the heat breaks. The swing becomes a symbol of that relief -- the rhythmic back-and-forth of trust and surrender, of holding on and letting go. Free HD download for phone and desktop.
