Holi begins in Braj -- the land of Krishna -- and it begins with Radha. The legend says Krishna, insecure about his dark blue complexion, asked Yashoda why Radha was so fair while he was so dark. Yashoda, half-joking, told him to go paint Radha's face any color he liked. And so he did. And that is how the world got Holi. This image captures the essence of that origin story: Radha and Krishna covered head to foot in vibrant gulal, laughing so hard that the powder puffs off their clothes with each breath. Krishna smears red powder on Radha's cheek with the gentle boldness that defines his character. Radha retaliates with a handful of blue -- the color of his own skin thrown back at him. The air is dense with airborne color, creating a warm haze that softens the entire scene into pure emotion. Gopis celebrate in the background, their forms blurred by the cloud of pigment that hangs over everything. In Vrindavan and Mathura today, the Lathmar Holi celebration re-enacts this exact scene -- women from Barsana (Radha's village) playfully beat men from Nandgaon (Krishna's village) with sticks while being doused in colors.
