About this image
There is a physics to swinging that mirrors something theological. At the apex of each arc, for a fraction of a second, you are weightless -- suspended between the pull of gravity and the push of momentum, belonging to neither direction. Vaishnava poets found in this moment a metaphor for the soul suspended between the material and spiritual worlds, held in place only by the chain of divine love. This Radha Krishna swing scene translates that metaphor into flowers and golden light. The swing is heavily decorated -- marigold garlands looping from the chains, silk ribbons catching the breeze, rose petals scattered on the seat. This level of decoration follows actual temple Jhulanotsav practice, where volunteers spend hours adorning the swing before the deities are placed on it. At the Radha Raman Temple in Vrindavan, one of the oldest living Krishna temples (est. 1542), the Jhulanotsav swing is prepared with specific flowers for each day of the festival week. The garden setting places the scene outside the temple, in the space where Radha and Krishna's story actually unfolds -- among trees and birds, under open sky. The traditional painting style nods to the Kangra miniature tradition of Himachal Pradesh, where the swing scene is one of the most frequently depicted Radha Krishna compositions.
