About this image
Tanjore painting -- or Thanjavur painting, as the purists insist -- originated in the Maratha court of Thanjavur around the 16th century. The style is unmistakable: dense surface decoration, embossed gold foil that catches light from every angle, and semi-precious stones inlaid into the gesso work. This digital rendition captures those hallmarks faithfully. Radha and Krishna stand beneath the characteristic ornamental arch, their figures adorned with the exaggerated gold jewelry that defines the tradition. The red and green of Radha's sari follow the classical Tanjore palette, where these colors symbolize fertility and devotion. Krishna's deep blue skin contrasts magnificently with the gold leaf surrounding him. What makes Tanjore painting special is its tactile quality -- even in a digital wallpaper, you can almost feel the raised gold surfaces and the texture of the wooden board beneath. The Brihadeeswara Temple in Thanjavur, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, houses some of the earliest examples of this art form. Our version translates that temple grandeur to your screen. Notice the precision of the border patterns, each repeated motif hand-drawn in the traditional manner. The arch frame draws the eye inward, centering the divine couple in a shrine of gold.
