About this image
This powerful wallpaper depicts one of the most heroic moments in Hindu mythology — Lord Shiva consuming the deadly Halahala poison that emerged during the Samudra Manthan, the churning of the cosmic ocean. When the devas and asuras churned the Ksheer Sagar (ocean of milk) to obtain the nectar of immortality, the first thing to emerge was a terrifying poison so potent that it threatened to destroy all of creation. With no one else willing or able to contain this cosmic toxin, Lord Shiva stepped forward and drank the entire ocean of venom. The image captures the critical moment when Goddess Parvati, seeing the poison descending through His throat, pressed His neck with both hands to prevent it from reaching His stomach and destroying the universe that resided within Him. The poison remained trapped in His throat, turning it blue and earning Shiva the name Neelkanth, the blue-throated one. The devas and asuras watch in awe as the supreme ascetic performs this ultimate act of sacrifice for the preservation of creation. This episode reveals the essence of Shiva's nature: while He is known as the Destroyer, He is equally the Protector who takes upon Himself the poison of the world so that others may live.
