The minimalist composition follows the Japanese aesthetic principle of ma -- the purposeful use of empty space as an essential element of design. Zen gardens were created by Buddhist monks as external representations of internal landscapes, places where the mind could practice the art of seeing without grasping. The raking of the sand is considered a meditative practice in itself, with monks rising before dawn to create fresh patterns that will be contemplated throughout the day.
