The ancient Buddhist temple of Borobudur in central Java, Indonesia, emerges from morning mist at sunrise -- its bell-shaped stupas silhouetted against layers of volcanic mountains and jungle stretching to the horizon. Built in the 9th century during the Sailendra dynasty, Borobudur is the largest Buddhist temple in the world, constructed from approximately two million blocks of volcanic stone. The temple consists of nine stacked platforms -- six square and three circular -- topped by a central dome, representing the Buddhist cosmological journey from the realm of desire through the realm of forms to the formless realm of enlightenment. Over 500 Buddha statues and 2,672 relief panels adorn the monument. Watching the sunrise from Borobudur's upper terraces is considered one of the most spiritual experiences in Southeast Asia.
