About this image
A traditional Japanese zen garden temple at dawn -- the wooden temple building with its gracefully curved roof sits within a perfectly raked sand garden, moss-covered rocks placed according to centuries-old principles of asymmetric balance. Cherry blossom branches arch into the foreground, pink petals floating in the still morning air as soft mist settles over the composition. Zen gardens (karesansui -- literally "dry mountain water") were developed by Zen Buddhist monks as spaces for meditation. The act of raking the sand into perfect patterns is itself a meditative practice, and the garden's stark minimalism reflects the Zen principle of reducing everything to its essence. The most famous example, Ryoan-ji in Kyoto, has been contemplated by monks and visitors for over 500 years.
