About this image
Three sacred moments define the life of Siddhartha Gautama -- and Vesak is the day all three are commemorated simultaneously. This magnificent triptych HD wallpaper presents all three in a single devotional composition against a rich gold and dark background. On the left: the birth of Prince Siddhartha in the Lumbini garden, where Queen Maya Devi reached up to grasp a Sala tree branch and the infant was born, immediately taking seven steps and declaring his arrival as one who would be born no more. In the center: the supreme moment of Bodhi -- Siddhartha seated under the Bodhi tree in the bhumisparsha mudra, divine white-gold light radiating from his body as he attained perfect awakening in the 35th year of his life. On the right: the Mahaparinirvana -- the great final passing at Kushinagar, where the 80-year-old Buddha lay down between two Sala trees and entered the final nirvana, attended by his monks. Three events. One full moon. The same lunar calendar date of Vaisakha witnessed all three across the arc of one extraordinary human lifetime. The Buddhist teaching of impermanence (anicca) is itself contained in this triptych: everything arises, everything passes. Birth leads to death. But between those poles, if one walks the Eightfold Path with sufficient diligence and compassion, there is the possibility of awakening -- of breaking the cycle entirely. The center panel, with its blaze of enlightenment, is the answer that transforms the other two. This HD wallpaper for Buddha Purnima and Vesak is a complete visual dharma teaching.
