About this image
Lord Buddha sits in perfect stillness under the sacred Bodhi tree -- the ancient fig tree at Bodh Gaya, Bihar, beneath which Prince Siddhartha Gautama attained supreme enlightenment 2,500 years ago. The posture is bhumisparsha mudra -- the earth-touching gesture, where the right hand reaches down to touch the ground, calling the earth itself to witness the moment of awakening. The full moon shines through the heart-shaped leaves of the Bodhi tree, casting silver-gold light across the serene face of the Tathagata -- the one who has arrived at truth. This image is the quintessential visual for Buddha Purnima, the most sacred day in the Buddhist calendar -- the full moon day of Vaisakha (April-May) on which three supreme events in the Buddha's life are believed to have occurred: His birth as Prince Siddhartha in Lumbini, Nepal; His attainment of Bodhi (enlightenment) under the Bodhi tree; and His Parinirvana (passing into final nirvana) in Kushinagar. That all three happened on the same full moon day is considered one of the most sacred coincidences in all of human spiritual history. The Bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya still lives -- or rather, the tree currently growing there is said to be a direct descendent through cuttings of the original tree. In the 3rd century BCE, Emperor Ashoka's daughter Sanghamitta brought a cutting from the tree to Sri Lanka, where it has grown continuously ever since. Some cuttings were later returned to India, creating an unbroken botanical lineage back to the night of enlightenment. This Buddha Purnima HD wallpaper brings the sacred atmosphere of that night to your screen. Free download.
