Each bloom is perfect: petals open in complete fullness, the yellow center radiant, the reflection in the mirror-like water as clear as the flower itself. The scene is utterly still. Not a ripple disturbs the surface. The moon above provides just enough light to make the pink glow almost luminous against the dark water. In Buddhist teaching, the lotus is the central symbol of enlightenment and spiritual possibility. The lotus grows in mud -- in dark, murky, stagnant water -- and yet rises to the surface completely uncontaminated by the mud below. Its petals are perfectly clean. This is the teaching: human beings are born into the "mud" of samsara -- the cycle of suffering, desire, and ignorance -- and yet have within them the capacity to rise above it completely and bloom in the full beauty of their Buddha-nature. The lotus is also the seat on which Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are depicted: every image of the Buddha shows Him seated on a lotus throne, indicating that while His body touches the world, His mind rests in the purity of enlightenment. The different colors of lotus carry different meanings: white for mental purity, blue for wisdom, red for love and compassion, and pink for the supreme Buddha.
