About this image
Happy Buddha Purnima! This serene greeting image captures the essence of the most sacred Buddhist festival in a single powerful composition: the silhouette of Lord Buddha in meditative stillness, seated before a giant luminous full moon. The Bodhi tree's branches frame the silhouette from above, their heart-shaped leaves catching the moonlight. At the bottom of the image, in warm gold lettering: "Happy Buddha Purnima" -- the blessing you share with every Buddhist friend and family member on this most auspicious of days. Buddha Purnima, also known as Vesak or Wesak in Theravada Buddhist countries, is celebrated on the full moon (purnima) of the month of Vaisakha (April-May). It commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and Parinirvana of Siddhartha Gautama -- the historical Buddha whose teachings transformed the spiritual landscape of Asia and eventually the world. UNESCO has recognized Vesak as an international day of peace. In India, where the Buddha was born, attained enlightenment, gave his first sermon (at Sarnath), and entered Parinirvana (at Kushinagar), the day is observed with prayers at the sacred sites, offering of flowers and lamps at temples, release of birds and animals as an act of compassion, and meditation. In Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and across the Buddhist world, entire cities are lit with lanterns and prayer flags. The full moon of Vaisakha has been watching over these celebrations for 2,500 years -- the same moon that shone the night the Buddha touched the earth and became the Awakened One.
