UNESCO has recognized Vesak as an international day of peace. In India, where the Buddha was born, attained enlightenment, gave his first sermon (at Sarnath), and entered Parinirvana (at Kushinagar), the day is observed with prayers at the sacred sites, offering of flowers and lamps at temples, release of birds and animals as an act of compassion, and meditation. In Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and across the Buddhist world, entire cities are lit with lanterns and prayer flags.
