About this image
After the storm, silence. After the killing of Hiranyakashipu, after Lakshmi calmed his rage, Narasimha settled into meditation -- and this HD wallpaper captures that aftermath with the weight of South Indian bronze sculpture tradition. The forest setting is not random. Many Narasimha temples in South India are located in forested hills -- Ahobilam in the Nallamala range, Simhachalam on the Kailasa hill, Melkote surrounded by the Thondanur hills. The association between Narasimha and wild, forested terrain makes theological sense. A half-lion god belongs in the wilderness, not in a city. The padmasana (lotus pose) is rendered with the formal precision of Chola-era bronzes. Each limb is positioned according to the Shilpa Shastras -- the ancient Indian texts on sculpture that prescribe exact proportions for every deity form. Narasimha's meditation mudras follow Pancharatra iconographic rules: specific hand positions that distinguish Yoga Narasimha from other meditative Vishnu forms. Adishesha's hoods above create a natural parasol, a detail found in virtually every Yoga Narasimha sculpture from Andhra Pradesh to Tamil Nadu. The serpent canopy is both protection and identity -- it says "this is Vishnu, resting." Free HD download for phone and desktop.
